***I warn you I am not a big fan of zombie themed books***
This book starts out much the same as all things zombie do. An unknown virus gets loose into whatever from where and bam zombies. There has to be another way to create a zombie because this is just a repetitive theme.
Anyway, The difference between this book and other zombie things I've seen and read is that our main character is talking to us as things are going on. Step by step. I couldn't help but picture a camera man trying in vain to keep up with this woman while she grabbed her mighty pink hammer.
This aspect made the story enjoyable for me. It may be an over done theme but CM Wright had the magic touch to make this amusing.
Because this story is not only written in the 1st person, but also in the current time frame, you can feel Canada's emotions a lot stronger than you would have if the story were told in the more common 3rd person past tense.
I must admit this story made my heart race more than once.
I have to admit, the story needs Canada. Without her quirky little remarks and humorous outlook at the things going on around her, this story would almost be chilling to read.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is definitely an interesting book. As an amatuer photographer myself I absolutely fell in love with Kip as she struggles in L.A. trying to get the perfect shot.
Kip's thoughts on the people that dwell in "Beautifulpeopleville" will have you laughing out loud. She has to be the most cynicle teenager I've ever had the pleasure to meet even if just in a book.
This book isn't something I'd generally read, yet when I saw it, it called to me. Perhaps it was my love of photography and knowing that Kip, like anyone who loves the feel of a camera in their hands, has to have that perfect shot no matter the cost.
Perhaps my brain simply needed a break from the endless barrage of the normal stuff I read. Regardless of the reason, I'm happy I found this book. It's brought many smiles in the hours I've read it. And trust me you won't want to stop reading once you start this book will hold you that tightly.

Lethal Obession by Shandra Miller

This book starts off strangley. Well perhaps not so, but as we all know by now, I don't read Erotica unless asked to.
Anyway the wording is strong. This author clearly has a good grasp on the english language.
There was a part in the first chapter that confused me though. How a cop would even consider doing what Angela had done!
I loved the crime story aspect. It actually flowed very well with the erotica parts. I won't ruin it for you guys though!
A perfect blend of crime noir and steamy sex scenes, if you like erotica and crime novels.. This book will keep you wanting more.

Catskinner's Book (Book of Lost Doors 1) by Misha Burnett

This is definitely one of the stranger books I've read. It's gripping from the first page.
You first meet James who seems to be your everyday nutjob with an alter ego named Catskinner that loves nothing more than the thrill of the kill.
He works in a faux electronic store for a man named Vincent who for whatever the case may be, Vincent lives like a snowman in perpetual cold climates.
This book is VERY descriptive. You get lost easily within the spine of this wonderful story and quickly lose track of not only time but the fact that you yourself are not a part of the story.
I swear my husband tried to talk to me and I he was just muffled voice in the distance I was that lost!
Since my copy is print I don't get to read it much. I'd let the husband read it before me and asked him all kinds of questions (trying to know what happens before I read that far) but he refused the spill the beans.
I was quite intrigued during the mass amount of time James/Catskinner stood staring at the wall.
This book is full of action and quirky quotes. It will definitely keep you wanting more.
Catskinner's book is a genre of its own fitting into neither of the genres it's tagged for.
If you like amazingly detailed fight scenes and the strange and unusual, this book is for you.

Alpha Girl (Wolfling 1) by Kate Bloomfield

I absolutely loved this book! The writing is flawlessly done and you can feel every emotion Rose goes through. Some things are a bit questionable with the story itself but it's obviously understood why the events happen. As an outsider myself, I found Rose very easy to relate to.
I have to admit there were parts of this story that made me cry, and parts that made me laugh. This story is woven beautifully. The characters are unique in their personalities. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to the next installment. I wonder though if our Alpha Girl will ever find her maker. And if she does what will she do when confronted with the beast that made her as she is?
I'm sure Kate has the answers to these and other surprises up her sleeve. I recommend this book to anyone, who like me, enjoys a good howl at the moon.

Love's Second Chance (Second Chance Series) by LP Dover

***I will begin with my usual warning... I am not a fan of Romance.. and even less of Descriptive Romance or Erotica. That said I give my word that regardless of my personal preference I will not rob this book of an honest review***
This story starts out sad. I have to admit I got choked up as I read the prologue. This author clearly knows her craft as she weaves Kori's heartbreak and fears into the reader with the very first sentence.
I enjoyed the split point of view, as the story bounced between Korinne and Galen. I feel multiple points of view in a story narrow the chance of a gap or loop hole within the weave of the story.
As far as love stories go, this one is definitely better than most I've read. It doesn't have a forced feel to it. The writing flows at a steady pace allowing the reader to sink into the depths of the story.
The whole story feels real. The reader can relate to the events happening. When Jenna and Kori talk to each other on the phone the excitement between them pulses so much you can't help but feel it too.
The fact that Korinne and Galen can pretty much pick up where they left off (even if Korinne is trying very hard for that not to happen) warms the heart. It's not often a person runs into an old lover that actually missed and has the opportunity these two have.
I give Galen tons of credit. The man is genius using Korinne's gifts to get his way. Sure it was sneaky, but sometimes you have to be just a little sneaky to get what you want!
There is definite chemistry between the two and I'm certain that had things not happened as they did in the time before this part of their story, then this story would never have needed to be written at all.
I enjoyed reading all the ways Galen wooed Korinne. It was all very romantic and endearing.
The sex scenes are racy. Ms. Dover is a very descriptive writer and trust me when I say your five senses work over time while reading this book.
This book will have you smile, laugh, cry, and go through emotion you didn't even know existed and you watch love triumph over adversity.

Days Gone Bad (Vesik 1) by Eric Asher

Okay I have to give Eric credit where it's due. This book is amazing.
The opening lines grip you and while you tell yourself "I'm not supposed to be reading this yet" you find yourself unable to stop reading it.
I'd be quite interested in a prequel to this even if just a novella to explain how Damian and Sam got to where they are at the start of this book. It's a bit
confusing in that area. I have to admit at the moment, Cara is my favorite character. That's one faery you don't want to cross paths with! And I have no idea what Cu Sith is but I want one!
I'd personally love to read about Zola's past adventures as well.
The characters are so unique and interesting you can't help but to want to know more about all of them.
Eric obviously put in a lot of effort to research the myths and legends of the Sidhe, Seelie and Unseelie for this book and it shows immensely. Everything from Foster's and Cara's abilities down to the use of the Triquetra (Celtic knot) are almost flawless.
I also enjoyed the integration of the old gods, with the vampires and Fae. As well as the new breed of "oh dear gods" I came across around Chapter 9 or so.
While the story is serious, you won't miss the humorous undertones in Damian's demeanor, or in the comical things that happen in the shop.
All in all.. This book is great. I'd love to see a couple of prequels on Damian, Sam, and Zola at some point, and absolutely look forward to seeing more from this creative writer.

Paranormal Anthology with a TWIST (Various Authors)

Since this is an Anthology This review will be slightly different. As Anthologies are a comprised of more than story, it would do the book as a whole a great injustice to review and rate the book as such. This review I image will be quite lengthy as I'm going to break down and review each individual story within this book's covers...

Voices of the Soul (Soul Seers 1) by Rene Folsom

The start of this didn't come as a total surprise. It seems to be the current fad to have the main character come into or learn that have some special ability. Though Orella's is a bit different than I've encountered recently.
The fact that her mother was able to convey the message and a small amount of what Orella can do, is a touching moment that will make a lump form in even the strongest of people.
While Jonah isn't suprised that he and Ella share the same gift.. Ella's reacting is priceless! I cried from laughing so much.
About the only thing I didn't care for in this story was Jonah. I mean as a characer he's great.. his vocabulary could use an upgrade. The lines he uses on Ella come off as being staged, like he's reading the script for a cheesy 19th century romance.
The ending of this however isa good one. It's quite unexpected and a great start to the Soul Seers Series.

Number 18 by Michael Loring

I'd like to start with..Hell Yeah!!! I absolutely loved the start of this story. The cold fear and adreline coursing through Robert's veins pulses through the readers as well as he stalks and attacks his prey. I'm sure if he'd known what he was up against he'd have changed his mind, but that wouldn't make the story interesting.
I wish this story had been a bit longer. There's not enough to really grasp the reader. The story does hold a lot of potential. The main characters are well thought out and you can picture the grey area between good and evil in which they dwell. I feel however that because it really isn't more than a piece of flash fiction, there isn't enough detail given to the moment. Because of this I can't accurately give the story a strong rating.
I hope Michael Loring will consider lengthening this teaser story into something I can give a justified rating to, but for now...

Sweet Lenora by Bart Hopkins

This story has a historical feel to it. I can't quite place the time though it would have to be the year of or slightly after the new car Lenora's mother bought, though the feel is older than that. Lenora and especially her mother conduct themselves as if they lived in the Victorian era.. Though I suppose that could be due to how close to that era's end this story takes place and Lenora's mother's illness and detachment from the world around her.
This story is vividly descriptive. Every nuance forms in your mind's eye and before you're even aware you're no longer reading a story but watching it on a screen on you can see. Bart Hopkins has a way with words that so few do, the ability to capture his audience even with works as short as this.
There's one thing that confuses me about this story and prevents me from giving a 5 rating. How long was Lenora's mother as it was discovered at the end? And why had Jakob been so cruel for absolutely no reason? With these questions in mind, I hope the author will consider prehaps lengthening the story a bit just so the confusion is no longer there.

Truth or Dare by Jon Messenger

This story starts out strong. Each character's persona is clearly marked within the first chapter. When the kid gloves come off during their game of Truth or Dare, that's when the this story takes is pludge into the darkness. It was smoothly done and flowed like it would have had the characters been real people. I liked that a lot.
This story is beautifully written.. However, it is also predictable. I give kudos to the Author for the research done on this though. 1) The knowledge that a spirit is bound to the place it died, and 2) Spirits see the living as we see them. I have to ask though, at the end, where was Brent?
As familiar as this story is, it was still enjoyable. It felt like seeing an old friend after many years apart.
For the beautifully written writing and the memories it inspired, I give this one 4 of 5

 

Suburban Zombie by Anthony Lance

I've read my share of zombie stories.. None are as creative as this one is. This is the funniest story I've read yet. The fact of a bunch of zombie women sitting around talking about health risks made me laugh until my ribs hurt!
Now before anyone starts complaining about the use of Mormons being the "zombies" in this parody.. You really need to evaluate. There is no other religious sect that could have been put in that role. Every non mormon at one point or another has been hounded by a mormon or a two. They don't care when you tell them you aren't interested in what they say, they come back numerous times until you're scared to leave your house.
I applaud this Author for being brave enough to take something we all think and twisting it into this hysterical story... Even if he thinks those of us that aren't zombies are just brainless zombies.

All I Want for Christmas by Jason Brant

The fact that a man can pull off a typical thirteen year old girl at the start of puberty is impressive. This thirteen year old "adult" has all the cocky "I know it all and should get to whatever I want" attitude down.
I also liked the simplicity of this story. It's the diary of an adolecent girl. You don't see many stories written as journals anymore. This was a nice treat for me.
However there's a few things I'd like to point out.. A LOT of the Pagan community may throw a fit over this story.. It's about the most inaccurate thing I've ever read. Luckily I'm not like most pagans.
I do feel the need to put in some corrections. 1) Witches don't celebrate Christmas, they celebrate Yule (december 21) 2) Witches do not eat people (or animals)
Inaccuracies aside, this story was charming and I always give honest reviews so 4 of 5

In the Eyes of the Beholder by Penelope Bartotto

I absolutely loved Betty... This story is very descriptive. The writing style is excellent. You see and feel everything the two main characters do.
I Wish there had been more to it though. To me this seemed to a romantic suspense rather than paranormal. The only element of Paranormal I really came across was Betty Lou. Even if I feel the story did not fit the nature of this anthology like it should, it was still captivating.
It's a well written piece of work, though the end confused me a little bit. Due to the nature of the Anthology itself I can not give this story a 5 since I feel it doesn't fit with the others.. I did love it though and so I give it a 4 of 5

 

Little Tchotchkes by Nicki Scalise

 This was a beautifully written piece of art. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the twist honestly caught me off guard. The detailed descriptions allow the reader to not only see everything but to feel it as well

The last line brought a smirk to my lips. It was a very clever touch to such a twisted story. Though I almost pity Marc in his psychosis, his little friend though, I think she should make a come back in another story.
I really liked the characters and while I can't even begin to touch on the madness and darkness they each held, this was a good read for any paranormal fan

I Am Serna by Magen McMinimy

This story disappointed me. It had a good strong start, but then it just ended. I can't help but feel like a chunk of this story is missing.

The writing style at the end of the story was nowhere near as strong as it had been at the beginning. I would love to read this story in its entirety.. However, if this is all the story has to offer before editing was done, the author should consider filling in the chunk that seems to have been ripped from it

Bloodlines by S.L.Dearing

This story is as old as time itself. This version was amazingly written. Descriptive enough to feel and see and hear everything as you read.

You can feel poot little Sascha's heart and how brave Eduard tried to be.
The time line is not commonly used, which is another added bonus. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading other works by Ms. Dearing.
I do hope the author will consider expanding on this piece and let Sascha and Eduard have many more adventures for her fans to read and look forward to.

Metronome by Eaton Thomas Palmer

This final story in the anthology was very predictable. I reminded me of an old episode of the twlight zone I'd seen when I was little. Where a reader likes description, I found this story to be a bit too descriptive.

It was almost as if the author were trying to fill in gaps with descriptions that didn't need to be there. I feel that because of the excessive amount of description in the story, the reader is almost robbed of the experience of watching the main character slowly lose his grasp on sanity because of IT.
I did however enjoy the irony of the end. That was amusing. Almost like a just desert.

As for the anthology as a whole, I think it's wonderful. And while I didn't completely like all the stories within the pages, other people will. I think some of the stories had too much spliced out of them which caused them to lose their hold of a reader, but with anthologies that's to be expected due to the needed size of each story.
I enjoyed reading the stories and I give a big kudos to each of the eleven authors that compiled this book. As for the stories I rated a 3, I'd love to read some longer works those authors have as I'm well aware that some people do much better with longer works where they don't have the "fear" of needed things being cut out.
I thank each of you for allowing me a taste into your minds.. and a big thanks to Cynthia for allowing me to review this.
I give this book 4 of 5 and can't wait to read the next one if Cynthia opts to gather some more.. or even these same authors to make a volume 2.

Heart You (Roommate Romance Series) by Rene Folsom

I have to say, though as most of you by now know, Erotica is not my genre of choice. This review is being done for a friend.
I loved how it began. I have no idea how old these characters are. If I had to guess, I'd say college age, or freshly out of college. They're fun, high spirited best friends.
Kara comes off as a party girl, Sam more as the quiet unintentionally shy type. Kara has no idea how Sam feels about her. The opening scene was a great way to break the ice and even had me chuckling a bit.
This story, being as short as it is, takes no time at all to go from rated R to XXX. It's a steamy read, and very descriptive. It's a sure favorite for any fan of the genre

Where to being with this one? I guess at the beginning. Dr.Harrington has accomplished something mankind has strived to find a way to do for decades, merge man and machine in a cyborg.
Only he and his team made one mistake, they never took into account the power and strength in the human mind. Kaitlyn is the name given to cyborg superhuman IFICS created. A beautiful girl who died in some tragic accident that's never gone into detail with.
She wakes up a cyborg, more machine than flesh. She dreams of her past, and still has human emotion and feeling.
I liked this book. It's a common theme taken in an entirely new direction. The fact that Kate can feel and have random human thoughts isn't anything new when it comes to stories about the cyborg race, however the fact that people can look at her and see her as more than just a machine is.
Lucas' conscious plays a large part in his parts of the book. He knows they've effectively played god and not one brought Kate back from the dead, but pretty much gave her immortality in the process.
The fact that he has feelings for her is a nice twist to this story.
Quess is written to sound younger than she is. She's described as small, and the impression is given that the three or four years that separate Kate and Quess' age will turn Quess from a child into an adult. I'm not sure how other 13/14 years are or were, but I was more mature than Quess at that age. I found myself having to continuously remind myself that Quess is a teenager not an eight year old.
I still liked the character a lot though. The fact that she'd stand up for Kate on more than one occasion speaks volumes for her character.
I almost cried when the reason she'd been created drew near, and sighed in relief at Lucas' heroics. This story is definitely a roller-coaster of emotions!
Fans of sci fi, friendship, love, and adventure are sure to love this story. I look forward to the next installment of IFICS.
